BYD swings to profit as overseas sales drive Q2 results

BYD reported second-quarter net income of 8.2 billion yuan, while vehicle sales outside mainland China rose 82.5% year on year to 471,091 units.

BYD posted a jump in second-quarter profit, ending a five-quarter losing streak as stronger overseas demand and premium models improved margins, the SCMP Economy reported. The Shenzhen-based EV maker said net income for the April-to-June period rose 30.0% year on year to 8.2 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion), beating a Bloomberg survey consensus estimate of 8 billion yuan.

Revenue slipped 3.0% year on year to 194.6 billion yuan. The company’s quarterly figures were compiled from its interim earnings report, released on Friday, and compared with first-quarter results, according to its Hong Kong stock exchange filings.

SCMP Economy reported that BYD sold 471,091 vehicles outside mainland China from April to June, up 82.5% year on year. A JPMorgan researcher cited in the article said average net profit margins per vehicle are about 5,000 yuan on the mainland, versus roughly four times higher at 20,000 yuan in overseas markets.

For the first half of 2026, BYD’s net profit was 12.3 billion yuan, down 20.5% from a year earlier, after the strong second quarter did not fully offset a decline in the preceding three months. First-half revenue fell 7.1% to 344.8 billion yuan.
