China museum unveils language hall with voice recognition booth

China has opened a new language resources hall at the Hunan Museum in Changsha, featuring an interactive voice recognition booth that identifies a visitor’s home dialect based on what they speak.

According to SCMP Economy, the exhibit is part of a broader push to convert China’s digitized archive of linguistic diversity into a public cultural resource, drawing from recordings and other materials collected over the past decade.

The hall displays recordings of local dialects, folk songs, and material tied to endangered languages, alongside interactive exhibits about linguistic developments in China.

State news agency Xinhua, as quoted by SCMP Economy, said digital technology is helping move language preservation research out of databases and into public cultural spaces, and the museum also shows more than 30 language-related cultural relics.
