Ivory Coast to keep cocoa farmgate price at 1,200 CFA francs/kg for 2026/27
The government said maintaining the 1,200 CFA francs guarantee is the least costly option for public finances because higher prices would require renewed subsidies costing billions.
Ivory Coast is expected to keep the fixed price paid to cocoa farmers for the 2026/27 main crop season at 1,200 CFA francs, or $2.14, per kilogram, according to six industry and government sources cited by Reuters.
The West African country previously paid farmers a record 2,800 CFA francs per kilogram at the start of the 2025/26 season, before cutting the guaranteed price to 1,200 CFA francs in March as global cocoa prices retreated from historic highs.
The 1,200 CFA francs level sits at the bottom of a 1,200 to 1,500 CFA francs range proposed by the regulator, the Coffee and Cocoa Council (CCC), based on average forward sales of the 2026/27 main crop between March and June. Reuters also reported that the CCC must sell about 80% of the projected harvest in advance to set the fixed farmer price, and sources said it was forced to conclude deals for more than 1.1 million tons at low prices.
A government source said simulations indicated that holding the guaranteed price is the best solution and the least costly for public finances, adding that going higher would mean subsidizing the price again at a cost of billions. Reuters said neighbouring Ghana, the second-biggest cocoa producer, is also expected to keep its farmer price unchanged for the new season.
