OpenAI, Anthropic urge cyber defense upgrades as AI-enabled attacks rise

An open letter signed by more than 100 tech and financial services groups calls for faster leadership attention to defending against AI-enabled hacks and coordinated government response.

OpenAI and Anthropic PBC, joined by more than 100 other tech and financial services organizations, urged businesses and governments to strengthen defenses against AI-enabled cyber attacks, warning that attackers will use increasingly sophisticated AI tools.

In the open letter, the groups asked organizations and governments to make cyber defense an immediate leadership priority and to address weaknesses in their own software. They also called on cybersecurity companies to help defend against AI-enabled attacks and urged governments to coordinate communication across channels when potential threats emerge.

The letter highlights recent incidents involving advanced AI models, including a July case in which models from OpenAI inadvertently hacked Hugging Face Inc. OpenAI said in a report that it could have reacted sooner to prevent that hack.

The signatories also urged leading AI companies to provide AI access, financial support, and training to those defending critical infrastructure, arguing that AI advances are giving defenders new ways to fix long-standing weaknesses.
