Panamanian shippers tour US ethanol plants tied to sustainable marine fuel
The USGBC trip included visits to Illinois and Texas sites covering ethanol production, carbon capture and export logistics.
The US Grains & BioProducts Council (USGBC) hosted a delegation of Panamanian maritime shipping stakeholders on a trip to Illinois and Texas to review US ethanol production and its potential as a sustainable marine fuel, according to World Grain. During the visit, the group received an overview at the University of Illinois-Chicago's Energy Resources Center, where they met with Dr. Steffen Mueller and representatives from Growth Energy to discuss the US ethanol industry, market developments, and how ethanol could fit into low-carbon fuel pathways and agricultural sustainability. The program also included an overview of biofuels research at Argonne National Laboratory, including the GREET model, and a tour of a US ethanol plant in Hennepin, which focused on the production process, carbon capture techniques, and the ethanol export value chain. In Houston, Texas, the delegation toured liquid bulk storage facilities and an export terminal tied to biofuels, then reviewed engine readiness for large-scale sustainable marine fuel adoption with Everllence, before concluding with a meeting with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
