The Hartford partners with UC Berkeley to support energy and materials startups
The insurer will provide risk management guidance and join UC Berkeley’s Launch Advisory Group, which is set to open an incubator program in 2028.
The Hartford is teaming up with UC Berkeley’s Bakar Labs to support startup companies developing next-generation energy and materials technologies, with the insurer planning to offer practical risk management advice as ventures move from lab concepts to commercial operations, according to Coverager.
As part of the effort, The Hartford will also deliver educational programs and hands-on mentorship to help early-stage companies anticipate how their insurance needs may evolve with growth. The insurer will be the only insurance company joining UC Berkeley’s Launch Advisory Group.
In that advisory role, leaders from The Hartford will work alongside experts across industries to guide founders in a new business incubator program scheduled to open in 2028. Coverager reports the initiative will focus on advanced energy systems and materials innovations.
The partnership will be led by Y-Risk, The Hartford’s specialized unit that designs custom insurance solutions for emerging technologies and unconventional business models. Coverager notes the company aims to deepen its understanding of novel risks to build better products and help clean-tech founders manage uncertainty, secure investment, and develop more resilient businesses.
