Bitcoin Knots prepares Sunday rehearsal for BLAKE2b fork
The Aug. 30 test is meant to replace SHA-256d with BLAKE2b on the breakaway chain, following a prior BIP-110 split that stalled after producing two blocks.
Bitcoin Knots is preparing a Sunday rehearsal for a BLAKE2b fork, aiming to move from Bitcoin’s SHA-256d proof of work to BLAKE2b on a proposed breakaway network. According to CryptoSlate, developer Luke Dashjr told SHA-2 miners to stop mining ahead of an Aug. 30 test that would replace the proof of work for that branch.
CryptoSlate reports that Bitcoin Knots 29.4.1rc4 would establish the final SHA-2 block before the switch. If the rehearsal succeeds, the group says a final 29.4.1 release could preserve the new chain on Sept. 1, while problems would trigger another release candidate and a reset to the last SHA-2 block.
The attempt comes about three weeks after a BIP-110 split from the dominant Bitcoin chain stalled after producing only two blocks. CryptoSlate notes the new proposal is designed to reduce dependence on existing Bitcoin miners by permanently moving the breakaway network to BLAKE2b hardware, with a weekend test intended to show the fork can run.
Still, unresolved implementation details and capacity questions remain, the outlet reports. As of Aug. 29, the public release page had not shown the rc4 or a final 29.4.1 build, key proof-of-work changes were still open, and the proposal had not identified major exchanges, wallets, custodians, explorers, or Lightning implementations committed to the chain.
CryptoSlate also highlights a potential mismatch between required and available mining power. One reviewer calculated an initial difficulty version would need roughly 870 terahashes per second for 10-minute block intervals, while measured testnet4 capacity was estimated at only 50 to 70 TH/s, and the public discussion did not disclose how much capacity operators would actually commit.
