GrainCorp CEO backs Australia bioenergy plan to cut liquid fuel imports

The strategy, unveiled Aug. 26, targets domestic processing of feedstocks like canola, tallow, and used cooking oil, and could reach $15 billion a year in feedstock value by 2050.

Australia’s Bioenergy Feedstock Strategy, unveiled Aug. 26, is designed to expand Australia’s bioenergy feedstock industry and strengthen the country’s base for producing low carbon liquid fuels, GrainCorp’s CEO Robert Spurway said, pointing to a plan to reduce reliance on imported liquid fuel.

Spurway said more than 90% of Australia’s liquid fuel is imported or derived from imported crude, leaving the economy exposed to global disruption. He argued Australia already has the agricultural and forestry feedstocks and supply chains to shift toward domestic processing, manufacturing, and fuel production.

The strategy highlights established feedstocks including canola, tallow, and used cooking oil as near term options for low carbon liquid fuel production. GrainCorp also cited its From Paddock to Plane white paper, saying existing feedstocks could support sustainable aviation fuel volumes equivalent to 117% of Australia’s projected jet fuel demand in 2030 without compromising food production.

Spurway said the initiative identifies five priority areas, including improving market-ready data, supporting innovation, and building credible sustainability and certification systems. GrainCorp estimates that by 2050, the feedstock component of Australia’s bioenergy value chain could be worth up to $15 billion annually and that a mature industry could support about 26,000 additional jobs.
