XRP open interest jumps, expanding leveraged funds net short
CFTC data show XRP open interest rose nearly 40% in a week, lifting total exposure to about 389.2 million XRP while leveraged funds net short widened to 115.7 million XRP.
CryptoSlate reports that the latest CFTC snapshot shows XRP open interest increased by 2,206 contracts to 7,783 futures-equivalent contracts, a rise of nearly 40% in one week. Using 50,000 XRP per standard contract, the expansion represented about 110.3 million XRP and brought total exposure to roughly 389.2 million XRP.
The outlet says leveraged funds increased their positions against the rebound, adding 3,206 shorts and holding 892 longs. That widened their net short to 2,314 contracts, equivalent to about 115.7 million XRP, up from about 57.35 million XRP a week earlier.
CryptoSlate adds that the same period saw dealers boost net longs by 1,195 contracts, or about 59.75 million XRP, to end at 2,121 contracts net long. Asset managers also added 565 net contracts, or about 28.25 million XRP-equivalent, to finish with 843 contracts net long.
According to CryptoSlate, leveraged funds do not necessarily place outright bearish bets in the category, as the CFTC does not disclose whether shorts are hedges. The report argues the growing net short leaves leveraged funds more exposed if XRP continues rising while other institutional categories are adding net longs, widening the gap between price momentum and positioning.
