AI chatbots mention insurers but often fail to recommend them
A Brainpain.AI benchmark of 300 insurance-shopping prompts across major assistants found that for some carriers, top-three placements did not translate into recommendations, with The Hartford’s 88.1% placement rate but only 27.6% active recommendation rate.
Insurance Business reports that a new Brainpain.AI benchmark distinguishes between how often insurers are mentioned in AI chatbot answers and how often they are actively recommended within those responses. The Q2 2026 Insurance AIVI Benchmark evaluated 300 consumer-style insurance-shopping prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Claude, producing 1,500 responses that included 4,328 organic mentions of 134 insurance brands.
The study found no single insurer led across every category. GEICO led for auto insurance, State Farm led for home and renters, MassMutual led for life, and The Hartford led for commercial, using a combined measure of ranking position, recommendation, and citation performance.
The most notable finding was a gap between visibility and recommendation. The Hartford posted the highest top-three placement rate among the study’s ten highest-ranked brands at 88.1%, but only 27.6% of its appearances included an active recommendation.
Brainpain.AI also found that market share did not reliably predict AI visibility. In home insurance prompts, Amica’s share of AI-generated visibility was 10.8 times its NAIC-reported market share, and the outlet notes the study framed the results as evidence that traditional measures of brand scale may not map cleanly to how AI systems surface insurers.
