Dow falls near 53,300 after renewed strikes raise war risk

Crude Oil rose more than 2% and longer-dated Treasury yields increased again, with the 10-year near 4.73%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed just short of 53,300, down about 250 points or 0.5%, after American forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island and Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks on bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, according to FXStreet.

The index opened just below 53,500, briefly pushed slightly above that level, then sold into the 53,100 area before recovering roughly 150 points into the close. FXStreet noted that crude gained more than 2% on the exchange, with Brent holding above $90.00.

With the Dow being price-weighted and holding a single energy producer, Chevron was one of the few names higher, while Goldman Sachs and Alphabet were among the major contributors to the decline. FXStreet said the renewed war headline continues to shape the index’s typical performance pattern.

FXStreet also pointed to broader tape context, saying the Dow finished August 1.4% higher for a fifth consecutive monthly gain, but that momentum faded after a record high near 54,750 on August 5. The article added that the pullback has unfolded alongside an expanded Treasury buyback program, higher longer-dated yields, and a Jackson Hole message the rate market interpreted as a commitment to tighten.
