Larvotto restarts Hillgrove mine, ramping antimony and gold output
The restarted Hillgrove operation is expected to produce 4,900 tonnes of antimony and 40,500 oz of gold annually over an initial eight-year mine life.
Larvotto Resources has restarted production at its Hillgrove mine in New South Wales, launching antimony and gold output in Australia. Mining.com reports the company says the project will provide a new Western source of a strategic metal that is mainly dominated by China and Russia.
Larvotto expects the operation to meet about 7% of global antimony demand and to account for more than half of supply outside China. The miner plans to produce 4,900 tonnes of antimony and 40,500 oz of gold annually over an initial eight-year mine life.
The company described the restart as a timely supply development as governments treat antimony security as a strategic priority. Hillgrove is also positioned as Australia’s second antimony producer, with Larvotto saying it is the country’s by far largest antimony miner.
Mining.com notes antimony prices have retreated sharply over the past year, after the metal climbed above a record $59,000 per tonne in May 2025 before falling to less than half that level. Hillgrove had produced intermittently after a modern-era run that included output from 1969, before temporarily closing in 2014, and Larvotto began the turnaround after acquiring the dormant asset in mid-2023 for A$8 million, including a A$5 million environmental bond.
