Marcos faces PR backlash after viral birthday serenade amid Luzon floods
The serenade took place on his wife’s 67th birthday, after heavy rain left Manila almost at a standstill by August 26.
A viral clip of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr singing to his wife has sparked a public relations backlash, as floods overwhelmed Luzon, the country’s largest island and home to Manila, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports observers said Marcos’ birthday celebrations, staged quietly on August 26 with a live band attended by family, close friends, and political allies, struck the wrong chord with a public already angry over the government’s disaster-relief handling and long-running allegations of corruption tied to flood-control projects.
Two days later, the outlet says a video captured at the party, in which Marcos croons “You” and “I Love Her,” surfaced on social media after being recorded by Vigan City Mayor Bonito Singson, intensifying criticism at a time when the capital was nearly at a standstill.
