Marsh appoints marine cargo logistics leader for US and Canada
The appointment takes effect October 1 and centers on advising clients on the Supreme Court’s May 2026 Montgomery logistics ruling and ongoing US-Canada tariff disruptions.
Marsh has named Herman Brito as practice leader for marine, cargo and logistics for the United States and Canada, effective October 1. Based in New York, Brito reports to Michael Pellegrini, head of specialty for the US and Canada at Marsh Risk, and succeeds Janice Kowell, who will remain on Marsh’s senior executive team after leading the practice since November 2023.
Insurance Business says the role will focus on two developments that have driven advisory work for Marsh’s marine logistics risk teams. The first is the Supreme Court’s May 2026 ruling in Montgomery v. Caribe Transport II, LLC, which removed an FAAAA preemption defense that freight brokers had used against negligent carrier selection claims.
The ruling shifts how freight brokers and the carriers they choose must be evaluated for liability, turning carrier vetting documentation and logistics liability program design into active advisory topics, according to the outlet. The second driver is the US-Canada tariff environment, including 50% US tariffs on Canadian goods now in effect and Canadian retaliatory tariffs scheduled to begin September 8, which impacts vessel usage, cargo volumes, routing decisions and counterparty credit risk.
Marsh also highlighted its buildout of logistics analytics, including a partnership on a $50 million data-driven trade disruption solution and the use of its Sentrisk platform to provide earlier signals to clients as trade conditions change, Insurance Business reported.
