SCO summit sidelines expected to focus on sanctions and energy

Discussions at the summit in Bishkek are expected to involve efforts to secure Chinese and Russian help in blunting the impact of expanding US sanctions amid drone damage to Russia’s energy infrastructure.

The 25th anniversary meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) began August 31 in Bishkek, with the agenda expected to emphasize building trade and digital connections and fostering cultural exchanges, according to OilPrice.

Ahead of the summit, the outlet said the event is widely seen as aimed at offsetting US influence, with prominent attendees including China’s Xi Jinping, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

OilPrice reports that the most significant talks may occur on the sidelines. It says Pezeshkian is expected to hold meetings aimed at securing Chinese and Russian help in blunting the impact of expanding US sanctions.

The outlet also said Putin is expected to reassure SCO members that Russia remains a strong economic and military power despite faltering efforts in Ukraine. It added that recent Ukrainian drone attacks have inflicted extensive damage on Russia’s energy infrastructure and its military-industrial complex, while Russian forces appear stalled and have incurred heavy casualties.
