Switzerland allows limited use of emergency protein feed reserves

The government said companies can withdraw up to 20% of the reserve stock, nearly 16,000 tonnes, starting Sept. 1 through February 2027 as drought and low river levels tighten feed supplies.

Switzerland has authorized limited withdrawals from its mandatory emergency protein feedstuff reserves because of supply constraints tied to extremely low water levels on the Rhine and Danube rivers, alongside limited roughage availability amid ongoing drought, according to World Grain.

Starting Sept. 1, companies may withdraw up to 20% of the reserve stock, nearly 16,000 tonnes, through February 2027. Roland Pfister, Switzerland’s delegate for National Economic Supply, approved the authorization.

The order also noted that soybean meal is especially important for Swiss feed manufacturing, and that Switzerland is almost entirely dependent on imports for this commodity. If conditions worsen, Guy Parmelin of the federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research can release the entire mandatory stockpile for withdrawal by decree.

World Grain also pointed to related industry capacity expansions, including Green Acres Milling’s planned move to begin operating an oat mill with production capacity of 39,420 tonnes per year of finished oat products. The outlet said a feature on the company and its new facility will appear in the September issue.
