Tokio Marine HCC names cyber underwriting leader for new role
The hire brings more than 15 years of cyber and professional liability experience, with Alva returning to the underwriting organization Tokio Marine HCC built after acquiring NAS in 2019.
Tokio Marine HCC has appointed Brian Alva as senior vice president of underwriting to lead its cyber and tech underwriting team within its Cyber & Professional Lines Group, Insurance Business reported.
Alva joins from Travelers, where he previously served as vice president of specialty cyber, and he brings more than 15 years of experience across cyber and professional liability, including underwriting leadership, portfolio strategy, product development and distribution.
Tokio Marine HCC CEO Michael Palotay said the appointment reflects how cyber underwriting has become more cross functional, requiring coordination across underwriting, claims, data, technology, risk services and distribution to improve outcomes for brokers and policyholders.
Insurance Business noted that Alva’s move has continuity, he spent nearly nine years at NAS Insurance Services before it was acquired by Tokio Marine HCC in 2019 and later folded into the group, and Alva previously helped build the underwriting operation from an earlier stage. The appointment lands as cyber pricing is described as largely stabilized after about three years of rate softening, even as recent claims data shows ransomware demands rising 47% year over year in 2025.
