U.S. installs record energy storage capacity in Q2
A Solar Energy Industries Association and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence report said Q2 added 20.2 gigawatt-hours, pushing total first-half installations to 30.8 GWh.
The U.S. installed a record high amount of energy storage capacity in the second quarter as utilities and grid operators increasingly used storage to improve reliability and support rising electricity demand, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.
OilPrice reported that the industry added 20.2 gigawatt-hours of new capacity in Q2, the largest quarterly installation period on record, bringing first-half 2026 total installations to 30.8 GWh.
The utility scale market led the surge with 18 GWh installed, supported by seven gigawatt scale projects, while Arizona installed more than 6.2 GWh, the largest quarterly deployment for any state in history.
In the report, SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence also said residential storage added 657 megawatt-hours and commercial and industrial installations totaled 1.8 GWh, with much of the C and I demand linked to data centers, and they raised their installation forecast by 11.5% through 2030.
