EU tackles China dependence in clean energy supply chain

The EU has cut Russian oil and gas reliance while ramping renewables, but its solar, wind, and battery buildout increasingly depends on Chinese equipment and critical inputs.

OilPrice reports that as the European Union phases out Russian energy imports and reduces overall oil and gas dependence, it has expanded renewable capacity under its green ambitions.

However, the outlet says the transition has shifted Europe’s energy security risk toward a new dependence on China, particularly for imports of solar panels, wind turbines, critical minerals, battery materials, and other components used in clean energy installations.

OilPrice adds that cheaper Chinese products have flooded EU markets, raising concerns about domestic manufacturing, energy security, and national security.

According to OilPrice, the EU has started launching measures aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese clean energy components as it tries to balance fast renewables rollout with cutting fossil fuel dependence.
