TAL partners with Cancer Council on youth sun-safety campaign

The insurer will target younger Australians with guidance to check the UV index and increase sun protection when UV levels are three or above.

Australian life insurer TAL has partnered with Cancer Council on a skin-cancer prevention initiative aimed particularly at younger Australians, with the first phase set to roll out across media and social channels in November.

The youth-focused sun-safety campaign will encourage people to check the UV index and use sunscreen, protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, and shade when UV levels reach three or above. TAL said its research found that 43% of Australians rarely or never check the UV index, and 62% do not know how to interpret it.

TAL also cited that 70% of people change their sun-protection habits based on the weather, despite UV exposure remaining high on cool or cloudy days. The insurer added that Cancer accounted for 17% of TAL claims paid in fiscal 2025, around A$800 million paid to about 9,600 customers and their families.

In addition to the prevention effort, TAL said it will fund its related engineering plans from its own resources, with closing expected in the second half of FY2025. Coverager reports that Microsoft will jointly invest in TAL’s engineering capability to consolidate TAL data on Azure and build a suite of AI tools.
