IBIT narrowly beats VOO since launch despite a 53.3% drawdown
IBIT’s peak to trough decline reached 53.3%, compared with 18.7% for VOO over the same window, leaving investors to endure much deeper swings in the Bitcoin fund.
BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), has narrowly outperformed the S&P 500 ETF Vanguard offers since IBIT’s Jan. 11, 2024 launch, but the lead barely holds up once drawdowns are considered, according to CryptoSlate.
IBIT returned 67.7% from inception through Aug. 31, compared with 66.1% for Vanguard’s S&P 500 ETF (VOO) on a total return basis that reinvests dividends, leaving IBIT ahead by just 1.6 percentage points.
The performance gap reflects very different investor experiences: IBIT’s worst peak to trough decline reached 53.3% from Oct. 6, 2025 to June 30, 2026, while VOO’s maximum drawdown was 18.7% from Feb. 19 through April 8, 2025, the outlet said.
CryptoSlate also noted Bitcoin traded near $47,000 around the start of US spot ETF trading in January 2024 and later hit about $126,000 in 2025 before falling as low as roughly $58,000 this year, with a recovery to around $77,000 as of press time. It added that BlackRock has recommended a 2% BTC allocation for diversification, and that IBIT manages about $60 billion in assets with roughly $63 billion of inflows since launch.
