New York plans $25M upgrades to Albany’s Empire State Plaza
The renovation is part of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s $400 million Championing Albany’s Potential Initiative to revitalize public spaces and support housing growth.
New York’s Office of General Services plans to spend $25 million to improve Empire State Plaza, a 98-acre complex of state government buildings in Albany, with the goal of making the area more active and accessible, according to ConnectCRE.
The project, outlined in a report prepared for OGS by architecture and design studio WXY, calls for upgrades that include added green space, improved wayfinding and navigation, enhancements to the visitor experience in the Concourse and the Plaza, and improvements to the Swan Street and Madison Avenue gateways.
ConnectCRE reports the investment will be carried out under Gov. Kathy Hochul’s $400 million Championing Albany’s Potential Initiative, which launched last year to promote housing growth, attract new residents, and revitalize public spaces in the state capital.
OGS has overseen the Plaza’s construction and has served as its caretaker since the complex was completed in 1978.
