Strike set to begin at Sibanye-Stillwater US platinum group metals sites
The walkout involves about 750 employees at the Stillwater East mine and Columbus processing facilities, with output impact depending on strike length and restart time.
Sibanye-Stillwater (NYSE: SBSW) is set to face a strike at its US platinum group metals operations beginning Thursday morning, after more than four months of contract talks ended without an agreement, Mining.com reports.
The United Steelworkers notified the company that workers covered by the collective bargaining agreement will strike from 7 a.m. on Sept. 3 at the Stillwater East mine and the company’s recycling and smelting facilities in Columbus, Montana. About 750 employees could be affected.
Sibanye-Stillwater said it has been engaging with the union for over four months to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, and that it remains committed to securing a deal that balances employee interests with operational changes needed for longer term sustainability of its US PGMs operations.
The sites produced 137,930 ounces of PGMs during the six months ended June 30, 2026, including 76,334 ounces from Stillwater East, about 55%. The company said the eventual production impact will depend on how long the strike lasts, operating arrangements, availability, and the time required to restart the affected operations, and it noted that after completion of the project second phase, annual copper production is expected to reach 550,000 tons.
