FBI investigates possible leak of driver’s license scans sold online
The FBI is looking into claims that a service called Nexus offers access to scans tied to more than 160 million North American driver’s licenses.
The FBI is investigating a possible breach involving an identity verification company that may have exposed scans of millions of Americans’ driver’s licenses, according to an FBI spokesperson speaking to Bloomberg News.
The investigation centers on an online cybercrime forum advertisement for a service called Nexus, which claims access to data tied to more than 160 million “North American” driver’s licenses, and additional records from more than 10 million other documents, including residency cards, medical cards and international identity documents.
If verified, the potential leak would rank among the largest exposures of US government identity documents, according to American cyber threat researcher Zach Edwards, whose identification was reportedly included in the documents for sale.
The FBI said it can confirm it is looking into the incident but declined further comment due to the investigation still being ongoing, and the service reportedly disappeared shortly after the investigation was confirmed.
