UN expert warns Gaza rubble removal could erase evidence of atrocities
The warning cites Palestinian estimates that more than 10,000 people may remain buried under debris in the war-ravaged enclave.
A UN special rapporteur has warned that large-scale rubble removal in parts of Gaza under Israeli control could erase traces of alleged atrocity crimes, complicating efforts to recover and identify human remains, Agence France-Presse reported, citing the expert's statement.
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories, said Gaza's rubble contains human remains and physical evidence relevant to investigations of alleged international crimes, including genocide, pointing to Palestinian authority estimates that more than 10,000 people remain buried under debris.
Albanese also said she received credible information last month indicating deliberate and widespread removal, crushing, and transport of rubble in Gaza.
She noted that she has faced sharp criticism from Israel and some allies over her longstanding accusations about alleged genocide and other war crimes involving Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
