Uzbekistan avoids Rosatom as it revises nuclear project oversight
A Sept. 2 update on the integrated nuclear plant omitted Rosatom and pointed to a new consortium with international engineering firms to boost management and technical oversight.
OilPrice reports that Uzbekistan signaled a shift in its nuclear strategy after earlier plans for its first cluster of reactors to be built by Russia’s Rosatom.
On June 4, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Russian President Vladimir Putin marked the ceremonial start of the project, with Putin saying Rosatom was the best option among those offered.
Three months later, Uzbekistan’s presidential press service published a lengthy Sept. 2 update on the integrated nuclear plant, but Rosatom was not mentioned in the announcement.
Instead, the statement said Mirziyoyev endorsed creating a new consortium to oversee construction, aiming to improve project management, strengthen technical oversight, and conduct independent assessments through a joint venture with leading international engineering companies, while providing no details on the consortium’s composition.
