China pledges tighter security cooperation with Central Asia
The push centers on protecting Belt and Road Initiative energy and transport corridors while targeting terrorism, separatism and extremism.
China’s public security minister Wang Xiaohong pledged deeper cooperation with Central Asian counterparts to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, and to strengthen safeguards for Belt and Road Initiative investments.
The pledge came during an informal meeting in Beijing of the China-Central Asia Public Security and Interior Ministers’ mechanism, which included ministers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, according to SCMP Economy citing Xinhua.
The effort follows an SCO summit a week earlier where China’s President Xi Jinping said security was a key goal and called for the bloc to foster an environment of common security, SCMP Economy reported.
SCMP Economy said Central Asian energy corridors and transport routes are considered vital to China’s economic and strategic interests, and the talks emphasized intelligence sharing, joint law enforcement training, and protecting infrastructure.
