Hong Kong and Kazakhstan ties expand for manufacturing and Europe links

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said a bank from a June delegation has backed Kazakhstan’s Development Bank with US$785 million in financing.

Hong Kong businesses are looking to Kazakhstan as a base for advanced manufacturing and as a potential gateway to Europe, a Kazakhstan business adviser said in remarks covered by the South China Morning Post.

Sabr Yessimbekov, adviser to the chairman of Kazakhstan’s National Chamber of Entrepreneurs, said some projects tied to memorandums of understanding signed during Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s June trip had already started, including processing of raw materials and industrial production by companies from Hong Kong.

He also pointed to examples of early activity, including tungsten miner Jiaxin International Resources, which became the first company to be dual-listed on Hong Kong and Astana’s bourses last year.

Lee, appearing virtually at the China Conference: Central Asia 2026, said a bank from his 70-strong business delegation had since provided US$785 million in financing to support the Development Bank of Kazakhstan, as the trip helped establish new trade corridors amid global geopolitical tensions and produced 96 deals worth US$1.65 billion.
