Baidu gains Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Connect access effective Sept. 7

The Stock Connect change gives mainland investors direct access to Baidu’s Hong Kong Class A shares, potentially widening liquidity and the shareholder base.

Baidu said its Hong Kong Class A shares are now included in both the Shanghai-Hong Kong and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect programs, effective September 7, which gives eligible mainland investors direct access to the Hong Kong listing. The update is expected to broaden the investor base and improve liquidity, according to Yahoo Finance.

The announcement does not change how Baidu competes against Alibaba in AI, as both companies are pursuing AI using different combinations of models, cloud infrastructure, chips, and consumer distribution. The piece frames Stock Connect as a catalyst that affects trading access more directly than near-term earnings.

On the hedge fund side, Insider Monkey counted 49 hedge funds holding Baidu as of June 30, down from 50 at March 31, while David Tepper’s Appaloosa Management disclosed 1,295,000 shares, 87% more than in Q1. The article characterizes that as one manager’s conviction rather than a broad increase in participation.

For context on sentiment and trading risk, Baidu’s August 14 exchange-reported short-interest settlement showed 10,894,402 U.S.-listed shares sold short, equal to 3.84% of float, with 5.52 days to cover, up 32% from the prior report. The article notes the timing predates the Stock Connect announcement and points to skepticism, while concluding that Baidu’s Hong Kong listing is now positioned with cleaner liquidity.
