Brokers start commercial renewal talks up to 5 months early

U.S. commercial premiums fell 2.0% in Q2 2026, with property down 6.3%, while umbrella and commercial auto rose 5.3% and 4.5%.

Some commercial insurance brokers are initiating renewal discussions as much as five months before policies expire as casualty pressures increase the importance of submission quality and timely carrier engagement, according to Insurance Business.

The longer timeline reflects a more divided market. Average U.S. commercial insurance premiums across account sizes declined 2.0% in the second quarter of 2026, CIAB said, after the market’s first quarterly drop since 2017 in the first quarter. By line, commercial property premiums fell 6.3%, while umbrella and commercial auto premiums increased 5.3% and 4.5%, respectively.

CIAB also said umbrella has logged 35 straight quarters of premium increases. Insurance Business noted that brokers are adjusting for differences by geography and coverage type, including insurer attention to probable maximum losses and concentrations of property exposure.

Ike White, senior vice president for Trucordia’s South Platform, said premiums on some established property accounts have declined by as much as 30%, and reductions have been uneven. He added producers have reported improved sublimits and lower wind and hail deductibles, and that brokers may use the savings to revisit coverage like cyber, directors and officers, and professional liability that clients previously declined for cost reasons.
