Genesco closes 25 stores in fiscal 2027 second quarter
Genesco ended the quarter with 1,186 stores, down from 1,253 a year earlier, and reported a 1.0% decline in comparable sales.
Genesco has closed 25 stores across its portfolio during the second quarter of fiscal 2027, including 17 Journeys Group locations, according to the company’s latest earnings release, as mall retailers continue to reduce their traditional footprints.
The company also opened three stores during the quarter, resulting in a net decrease of 22 stores, and it reported a 5.0% year-over-year drop in store count, ending the period with 1,186 stores versus 1,253 at the same point last year.
Genesco attributed its net sales decline for the reporting period to store optimization and said comparable sales fell 1.0% year over year, with stores up 1.0% while e-commerce declined 6.0%.
On profitability, Genesco reported gross margin improved by 560 basis points year over year, citing tariff refunds, and it said operating margin improved by 330 basis points, reflecting strategic actions including continued store closures.
