Japan rejects plan to recruit foreign nationals for shrinking military force

Tokyo said it will not use foreign recruitment to address projected Self-Defence Forces shortfalls even as the force could fall toward 130,000 personnel by 2045.

Japan has shut down a proposal that would have relied on recruiting foreign nationals to help address a projected post-2045 shortfall in the country’s Self-Defence Forces, the South China Morning Post reports.

The outlet notes that Tokyo has ruled out the idea despite a report released September 2 by a panel of senior former defense bureaucrats and military chiefs working with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

According to the same account, the SDF could shrink to about 130,000 personnel by 2045, nearly half of its current strength, underscoring the scale of the staffing challenge.

The SCMP reports that the proposal drew broad attention after the report’s release, but Japan’s stance leaves the foreign-recruitment option off the table.
