US strikes Iranian-linked tankers after missile attacks on US warship
The attacks prompted CENTCOM to target vessels near the Gulf of Oman and Iran’s Kharg Island, while Iran’s Mehr agency reported explosions at the island’s main oil export facility.
The US military said American forces struck multiple tankers linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after an attempted missile attack on a US warship, according to Bloomberg as cited by FXStreet. US Central Command said the strikes took place in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island, and that US forces directed crews to abandon ship before the vessels were hit.
CENTCOM also described the targeted tankers as part of a shadow network that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies. IRGC warnings said ships in Kuwaiti and Bahraini ports hosting US forces could be targeted in retaliation.
Separately, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported that explosions were heard on Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export facility. The article also notes that West Texas Intermediate was up 0.13% on the day at $92.35.
