Oil prices surge toward $100 after U.S. destroys five Iranian tankers
WTI was around $94.4 a barrel and Brent about $99.5 in early Asian trading, with both benchmarks up more than $1 after the latest U.S. strikes.
Oil prices pushed higher toward the $100 level in early Asian trading after the U.S. destroyed five additional Iranian crude tankers, according to OilPrice.
OilPrice reports that U.S. Central Command said the action followed IRGC targeting of a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles, continuing an escalation that began over the weekend when U.S. forces hit three other oil tankers.
Four of the carriers were destroyed in the Gulf of Oman, and one, M/T Derya, was struck near Kharg Island, OilPrice said, citing CENTCOM details and describing footage released afterward showing the sinking of M/T Riesco.
In response, OilPrice reports that Iran targeted U.S. forces in Jordan, with Jordan’s Armed Forces confirming 20 ballistic missiles were fired from Iranian territory, intercepted 18, and said the remaining two fell on unpopulated areas.
