Puerto Rico power outages not tied to major events rose 19% in 2025

EIA data shows Puerto Rico customers averaged 36 hours of outages in 2025 not caused by major events, versus 29 hours per year on average from 2021 to 2025.

In 2025, customers in Puerto Rico saw an average of 36 hours of power interruptions that were not caused by major events such as hurricanes, according to EIA data.

That figure was 19% higher than the level recorded in 2024, reflecting a rise in outages not linked to large disruptions.

EIA also said Puerto Rican customers have averaged 29 hours of power loss each year between 2021 and 2025.

For comparison, the EIA noted that electricity customers on the mainland United States generally experience about two hours of electricity interruption.
