Qualcomm shares jump on Amazon deal for custom data center chips
The agreement gives Amazon a right to buy up to $4 billion of Qualcomm shares via a warrant for as many as 25 million shares at $161.26 each.
Qualcomm shares rose nearly 9% to a two-month high after the company announced a multi generation partnership with Amazon for customised data center chips, aimed at supporting Amazon Web Services artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Under the deal, Amazon will develop customised silicon with Qualcomm for AI services and for connecting computer components. Qualcomm also said it issued Amazon a warrant to acquire up to 25 million shares at $161.26 per share, with the warrant shares vesting in tranches linked to Amazon chip orders.
Qualcomm said the chip orders could reach a total value of $60 billion over the next decade, reinforcing its push to expand beyond its smartphone business. The company has been pitching customised chips and other data centre technologies to cloud providers seeking alternatives to Nvidia's dominant AI processors, LiveMint Markets reported.
The partnership follows other custom AI chip efforts in the market, including a deal Marvell Technology signed with Alphabet's Google that gives Google the right to acquire a stake worth up to $12.2 billion, according to LiveMint Markets.
