Tung Chee-hwa remembered after Hong Kong first leader dies at 89
Hong Kong’s first leader after the 1997 handover, Tung Chee-hwa died on Tuesday at age 89, with colleagues describing his continuing engagement with city issues even after leaving office in 2005.
Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong’s first leader following its return to Chinese sovereignty, has died at age 89, according to tributes that began pouring in after his death on Tuesday, as reported by SCMP Economy.
People who worked closely with Tung said he remained focused on Hong Kong’s problems even in the years after he stepped down as chief executive in 2005, and they shared anecdotes about his approach to leadership.
Bernard Chan, chairman of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority board, described Tung as approachable and said Tung reached out to find solutions to issues the city faced even after retirement.
Chan added that Tung asked to meet him over lunch during a year of the National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference “two sessions,” to discuss Tung’s views on Hong Kong’s development and the future for young people.
