UK petrol jumps 5p a litre in a week as Iran war lifts oil
RAC said a litre of unleaded rose to 167.17p, a weekly increase last seen in April, while diesel moved up to 188.63p.
UK petrol prices rose by 5 pence a litre over the past week, with the RAC warning there is “no sign of any relief” for drivers. Unleaded now costs an average of 167.17p per litre, the biggest weekly increase since April, while diesel increased by 5p to 188.63p.
BBC Business reports that fuel prices have climbed since the US Israel war with Iran began at the end of February, as fighting has disrupted supplies of crude oil across the Middle East. Brent crude, the global benchmark, has returned to $100 a barrel for the first time since July.
The outlet also linked the move to recent escalation, including US strikes on Iranian tankers and attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia. Even though Brent is off its $120 April peak, it remains far above the $70 level seen before the conflict started.
RAC senior policy officer Rod Dennis said the latest rise shows how exposed UK drivers are to events thousands of miles away, noting the 5p per litre increase equates to about £2.75 more for filling a family-sized car in the past week. He said fuel prices have left drivers “having to dig ever deeper” with no relief in sight, and noted petrol was last this high in September 2022, while diesel remains below its April peak of 191.54p.
