Bayer and Neste plan US winter canola expansion for lower carbon biofuels
The partners announced Sept. 9 that they will launch newgold winter canola hybrids in the fall of 2027, targeting feed and biofuel demand.
Bayer AG said it will expand winter canola acres in the United States after finalizing a commercial agreement with Neste, a producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, according to World Grain. Under the deal, Bayer and Neste will jointly scale Bayer’s proprietary newgold winter canola in the US Southern Great Plains region, building a newgold network with additional value-chain partners to support the expansion and create an additional market for farmers.
Bayer plans to launch newgold winter canola hybrids in the fall of 2027. The companies said the arrangement is designed to strengthen supply of lower carbon-intensity oilseed feedstocks to meet growing global demand for biofuels such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.
World Grain reports that the winter canola grain is expected to produce high-protein meal sold into the feed market, supplying dairy and beef cattle, poultry, and swine. Bayer’s Crop Science strategy and sustainability head Frank Terhorst linked demand to energy security and resilience needs amid geopolitical tensions, alongside decarbonization of transportation.
