Clean hydrogen investment exceeds $130 billion across 570 projects
The Hydrogen Council said operational clean hydrogen capacity rose 70% this year to 1.7 mtpa, with capacity set to double next year.
OilPrice reports that the Hydrogen Council said clean hydrogen investment has accelerated to more than $130 billion across over 570 projects, citing an oil and gas supply shock tied to the Middle East conflict and growing demand for energy security.
According to the Hydrogen Council’s Global Hydrogen Compass 2026 report, total committed investment now exceeds $130 billion and has been lined up for 6.9 million tons per annum of capacity. The industry group also said operational capacity jumped 70% this year to 1.7 mtpa, and is expected to double next year as projects under construction come online.
China is the largest market for clean hydrogen development, accounting for the biggest share of committed investment at $44.5 billion. The report said about $12 billion of that amount moved forward to final investment decision over the past year.
OilPrice also notes that Europe holds the second-largest cumulative investment in renewable hydrogen capacity, with about $30 billion, and that more than half is aimed at hydrogen end uses. While decarbonization remains a key driver, the Hydrogen Council said current momentum is being led by energy security and hydrogen’s role as a strategic resilience lever.
