Fuel and spare-part shortages are worsening power failures in Gaza
Doctors warn that generator failures are forcing hospitals to rotate power cuts and delay care as fuel costs for diesel and oil rise for families.
SCMP Economy, citing Reuters, reports that power cuts across Gaza are increasingly endangering patients as shortages of engine oil and spare parts cause hospital generators to seize up. The outlet says one of Gaza’s largest functioning hospitals, Nasser Hospital, is operating under an austerity plan that includes rotating power cuts between buildings as fuel and maintenance shortages persist. According to SCMP Economy, Gaza has had no grid electricity since the start of Israel’s military offensive in response to Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, with Israel halting electricity supply and restricting fuel imports, including engine oil, as part of measures described as punishment of Hamas. SCMP Economy also notes that despite a US-brokered ceasefire in October 2025 that ended full-scale fighting, restrictions remained and Israeli attacks continued, leaving Gaza’s humanitarian and energy crises unresolved, with families facing rising costs for oil and diesel to run neighborhood generators.
