Griffin Health cuts workers’ comp claims and costs after safety review
After COVID-19 disrupted workplace safety priorities and drove claims higher, Griffin Health formed an executive steering committee in late 2023 to overhaul safety reporting, investigations, and claims workflows with its insurance partner PMA.
Risk & Insurance highlights Griffin Health Services in Derby, Connecticut as the 2026 Theo Award winner, crediting a management-led effort to improve employee safety and reduce workers’ compensation losses.
The outlet says Griffin’s leaders recognized that safety programs can lose traction over time, and that COVID-19 reshuffled priorities such that employee safety took a back seat. Claims crept upward, costs rose, and injuries tied to overexertion as well as slips, trips, and falls were trending worse.
In late 2023, Griffin created an Executive Steering Committee to review safety operations end to end, focusing not only on outcomes but also on the processes behind them, including reporting structures, investigation quality, claims management workflows, and how injured employees were supported during recovery.
Risk & Insurance adds that Griffin worked closely with its insurance partner, PMA, to examine best practices from comparable employers. It says many changes were incremental, and Griffin shifted its post-injury approach away from retraining only the injured worker toward broader process and support improvements, including changes to how it responds on nursing floors.
