CatIQ lifts insured loss estimate for June 2026 Montreal flooding to C$442m

The June 20 to 21 thunderstorms flooded hundreds of properties, and CatIQ will release its next loss update on December 22, 2026.

CatIQ, Canada’s insured loss and exposure index provider, has raised its insurance industry loss estimate for the June 2026 flooding event affecting Montreal’s West Island and surrounding areas to CAD 442 million, up 7.5% from its prior estimate of CAD 411 million.

CatIQ said the flooding was caused by a series of thunderstorms on June 20 and 21 that inundated hundreds of properties in Montreal’s West Island and areas south of the city.

The provider noted it previously estimated losses at CAD 409 million in an earlier update covering the same event, and it confirmed it will publish a fourth market loss update on December 22, 2026, six months after the flooding.

Artemis also reported CatIQ’s assessment that pluvial flash flooding events drove a larger share of Canadian catastrophe losses this summer, including more than 30,000 personal property claims tied to pluvial flooding and sewer backup in Ontario and Quebec between June and August.
