China carrier under construction could reach more than 336 meters
Satellite images reviewed by Janes show work on the bow of a new carrier being built at Dalian Shipyard, with projected length edging toward the USS Gerald R. Ford’s size.
China’s next aircraft carrier, under construction at Dalian Shipyard, could be around 336 to 339 meters long, according to satellite images reviewed by defense intelligence company Janes, as reported by SCMP Economy.
The images, captured on September 4, show work has started on the carrier’s bulbous bow, a detail that allows analysts to estimate its eventual overall length from stern measurements to the projected tip of the bow.
If the projected dimensions hold, the new ship would be roughly comparable to the USS Gerald R. Ford, which Janes estimates at about 333 meters.
SCMP Economy said the imagery offers fresh clues about how far from home Beijing may plan to operate its fleet and the logistics required to support such missions.
