Chinese supermarket founder sparks backlash with fixed four-year hiring plan

The proposal would make new hires sign only a four-year contract, with no renewal, despite the company’s reported benefits including paid leave and “unhappy leave.”

SCMP Economy reports that retail tycoon Yu Donglai, who founded the Pangdonglai supermarket chain in Henan province, has faced public backlash after proposing that future new hires sign only a four-year “training initiative” contract that would not be renewed.

According to the report, Yu has previously drawn national attention for what he describes as employee friendly policies at Pangdonglai, including setting pay levels where the company’s after tax monthly average salary is 9,000 yuan (US$1,350).

The outlet also says Pangdonglai offers 30 days of paid leave and 10 days of paid “unhappy leave” for employees who feel emotionally unwell.
