Google.org grant to expand tuition-free trades training for veterans

The Home Builders Institute said the program expansion targets a U.S. skilled labor shortage that it estimates costs $10.8B annually.

Home Builders Institute, or HBI, received a Google.org grant to expand its tuition-free, 12-week SkillBridge skilled trades training and job placement for transitioning service members, veterans, and military families, HousingWire reports.

The funding will add training cohorts at existing military sites and broaden course offerings, while strengthening job placement support with residential builders and contractors, according to the report. HBI said its Military Services program provides hands-on instruction in areas including carpentry and electrical work, along with industry-recognized credentials.

HBI’s SkillBridge program operates at 10 sites on or near military installations, including Camp Pendleton, Fort Bragg, and Fort Hood, and is delivered through the Department of Defense SkillBridge program.

HousingWire also notes that HBI research estimates the broader skilled-labor shortage costs the U.S. economy about $10.8B each year, a figure the organization links to the need for sustained partnerships to expand training and career pathways.
