SK Hynix weighs US memory chip plans with Intel’s Ohio site
The exploration includes options such as leasing part of Intel’s delayed Ohio complex or creating a venture with Intel and major cloud customers.
SK Hynix is exploring ways to manufacture memory chips in the United States, with Reuters reporting that the Korean memory maker is in discussions with Intel about potential approaches for Intel’s long-delayed Ohio complex.
The talks reportedly include leasing part of Intel’s Ohio site or forming a venture involving Intel and large cloud customers, though SK Hynix said no specific plan has been finalized.
For Micron Technology, the development matters because Micron is positioned as a major U.S.-based memory producer as AI demand has tightened availability for DRAM and HBM.
The article notes Intel has committed very large capital to the Ohio effort, which could reach about $100 billion over time, and that bringing an additional supplier into the project could shift some of the financial burden. It also flags risks that exploratory talks may not translate quickly into revenue and that producing advanced Korean memory in the U.S. could face cost, technology-transfer, and potential policy objections.
