Southeast Asia keeps expanding gas and LNG amid Hormuz supply shock
Global Energy Monitor estimates about 100 GW of new gas power generation and 70 GW of LNG import capacity are under construction, while warning LNG infrastructure could face the same price volatility.
Southeast Asia is continuing to build natural gas-fired power plants and expand LNG import capacity despite higher gas prices linked to the Middle East war and the Hormuz LNG supply shock, according to Global Energy Monitor as cited by OilPrice.
The net-zero think tank said roughly 100 GW of new gas-fired power generation capacity is under construction across the region, alongside about 70 GW of LNG import capacity.
OilPrice reports Global Energy Monitor warned that expanding LNG infrastructure could deepen exposure to supply disruptions and price swings that the crisis has highlighted, noting that any shift toward boosting domestic gas output would take time.
The outlet also said GEM identified at least 20 fields that could add around 62 bcm per year of production capacity by 2035, but it cautioned new supply would take years to develop and may not fully serve domestic power markets.
