St James and Lindner Prater fined £1.3m after fatal London window fall
The court heard a similar pane had fallen at the Corniche in August 2017, before the firms were convicted for health and safety failures.
Two companies were fined a total of £1.3 million after a coach driver was killed when a window pane fell from a luxury London development, according to the Guardian Business. Mick Ferris, 53, was crushed when a 130 kg pane dropped about 90 metres from the Corniche housing project in Vauxhall on 2 October 2018.
At sentencing in Inner London Crown Court, property developer St James Group Ltd received a £1.0 million fine and specialist facade contractor Lindner Prater was fined £300,000. Both firms were also ordered to pay costs of £125,000 each.
The firms were found guilty in August of ignoring foreseeable risks and failing to discharge duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The trial heard a window panel had previously fallen from the same development in August 2017, but the design had not subsequently changed significantly.
The Guardian Business reported that Ferris had been returning to his coach when the pane fell. The Corniche is located on Albert Embankment along the Thames, and luxury flats there have been listed for sale at about £3 million.
