US restricts visas tied to birth tourism ahead of Xi summit

Hours before Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States for a high-stakes summit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced visa restrictions tied to what the Trump administration has accused China of facilitating as birth tourism.

According to SCMP Economy, Rubio said the US is restricting visa issuance for those who engage in or facilitate the practice, and for those who profit from it, framing the step as a message that the US will not allow foreigners to exploit its immigration system.

Rubio added that the restriction is meant to prevent violations of the sanctity of US citizenship, as stated in a Wednesday announcement.
